GTA 6 launch-day checklist: 12 things to do before it unlocks
TL;DR: Free 250 GB, update your console, preload (Nov 10–12), turn on rest-mode downloads, charge the controller, mute spoilers, and check your local unlock time.
The week before (Nov 12–18)
- Free 250 GB. The game is reported at ~210 GB; leave headroom for a day-one patch. Check with the calculator.
- Update your console firmware. A pending system update can block a game from launching.
- Start the preload as soon as it appears (PS5 digital possibly Nov 10, others Nov 12). How to preload.
- Turn on rest-mode / standby downloads so updates install overnight.
- Confirm your payment went through. Pre-orders that fail to charge do not preload.
- Check your PS Plus / Game Pass Core status if you want online features later. GTA 6’s story does not need them.
Launch day (Nov 18–19)
- Know your exact unlock minute. Americas: 12:00am ET (9pm PT Nov 18). Elsewhere: local midnight. Your city.
- Charge the controller or keep a cable nearby.
- Mute spoilers on Threads/X/TikTok: “GTA 6 ending”, “spoilers”, character names.
- Download the day-one patch first. If one appears at unlock, let it finish before starting.
- Pick a display mode. Try the performance and quality options in settings in the first ten minutes, not halfway through a mission.
- Stock snacks. Tell people you are busy. You know why.
If GTA 6 will not start at unlock
- Open the download queue: the preload may be incomplete or a patch may be pending.
- Restart the console. Fully restart, not rest mode.
- Check PlayStation Network / Xbox Live service status. Launch-night load is real.
- Physical code-in-box copies: make sure the code was redeemed on the right account.
